History of  Rice Blast

1. In India, the disease gained importance when a devastating epidemic occurred in Thanjavur (Tanjore) delta of Tamilnadu India during 1919.

2. The disease has been recorded from almost all the rice growing regions of India. However, the intensity of the disease varies in different regions in different years.

3. Rice blast epidemics are often more severe in temperate and subtropical ecosystems, but they can also occur in other environments if blast-susceptible cultivars are grown or if effective management strategies are not implemented.

4. In India, blast is especially problematic in temperate areas, hilly tracts, tropical uplands and in delta regions
