1. The transplanting sequence of seed parent and pollen parent in the hybrid rice seed production plot depends on the growth duration of seed parent (A line) and pollen parent (R line)

Spacing for different lines

Between `R’ line rows : 30 cms

Between `A’ line rows : 15 cms

Between `R’ & `A’ line blocks : 20 – 30 cms

Between hills (`A’ & `R’ lines) : 15 cms

Transplanting of CMS line (A line)

1. Transplant `A’ line seedlings in blocks of 8 rows in between the paired rows of `R’ lines.

2. Transplant with 1-2 seedlings per hill at a spacing of 15 x 15 cms.

3. Leave a 20 cm wide between A line rows and nearest R line row.

Transplanting of the R line (Restorer Line)

 

1. Transplant the seedlings of R line in paired rows in main field.

2. Leave a space of 145 cms inside block between paired rows of `R’ line seedlings for transplanting 8 row blocks of `A’ line seedlings.

3. Transplant 2-3 seedlings per hill with a row-to-row distance of 30 cms and plant-to-plant spacing of 15 cms.

Why transplanting

1. Transplanting gives proper plant spacing, resulting in uniform growth.

2. Transplanting gives the optimum crop stands for getting maximum seed yield.

3. Transplanting makes field operations such as weeding, spraying, fertilizer application and roguing easier.

4. Hybrid rice is planted in rows in only one direction; plants within rows do not line up across rows.

Differential sowing times for CMS multiplication

Number of sowings: A line—one, B line-- two

1. Do differential sowing of A and B lines are done to have synchronized flowering.

2. Begin the sowing sequence by sowing the A line on the first day.

3. The first sowing of the B line is done 3 days after sowing of the A line.

4. The second sowing of the B line is done 3 days after the first sowing of the B line.

5. The two sowings of the B line will supply pollen grains for a prolonged duration during the flowering period of the A line.

Number of Sowings:
A line--one R line--three

1. Begin the sowing sequence by sowing the R line on the first day.

2. The second sowing of the R line is done 6 days after the first sowing.

3. The third sowing of the R line is done 6 days after the second Sowing.

4. Sow the A line 4 days after the third sowing of the R line.

5. The three Sowing of the R line will supply pollen grain for a prolonged duration during the flowering period of the A line.

Differential Sowing Times

Generally three Differential Sowing Times are practiced
1. Seed parent has 10-day shorter growth duration than pollen parent.
2. Seed parent has 10-day longer growth duration than pollen parent.
3. Seed parent has same growth duration as pollen parent.

Determining sowing time of A and R lines

1. In hybrid seed production, we normally seed the R line seeds are three times. The sowing dates are selected by 3-day intervals.

2. The A line is always seeded just once.
The sowing of the A line and the second sowing of the R line are separated by the number of days according to the date required to commence flowering and growth duration.
3. If the A line growth duration is shorter, the second R line sowing is done before the A line.
Example 1:
R line growth duration = 100 days A line growth duration = 90 days

Staggered sowing

1. Success in CMS line multiplication or growing for hybrid seed production depends on synchronizing the flowering of the seed parent and the pollen parent.

2. By synchronizing flowering, it means that the seed and the pollinator parents commence flowering at the same time in the field, even though they may have different growth durations.

3. Synchronizing flowering is important because we want pollen grain from the B or R line are to be available to the A line throughout its flowering period.

Seed bed Management

 

1 .Irrigate the seedbed to a depth of 2-3 cm. 2. Drain the water occasionally to attain vigorous seedlings 3. Gradually increase water depth to 5 cm to control weeds. 4 .Pull remaining weeds by hand; weeds compete with seedlings for light, water, and nutrients.
