Symptoms of Rice Root aphid

1. Attacked plants appear yellowish and the leaf tips become curled up and dried.

2. The soil around the plants becomes loose and ants are found frequently in association with aphids.

Management of Rice Root aphid

1. Several natural enemies are recorded: a braconid wasp Aphidius sp. and a mermithid nematode Mermis sp. are recorded parasites of nymphs and adults.

Bio ecology of Rice Root aphid

1. Females reproduce parthenogenetically and develop into alate or apterous forms. Adults remain in the cavities made by the ants around the root system and each adult gives birth to 35-40 nymphs in its life cycle.

2. Under conditions of heavy infestation, winged individuals develop and ascend the leaves for migration.

3. Braconid wasp, a mermithid nematode and lady beetles are the major natural enemies.

Bioecology of Rice Mealy Bug

1. The bugs reproduce by ovipary and by parthenogenetic vivipary.

2. Eggs are laid and nymphs emerge concurrently and are covered by a distinct waxy and powdery coating.

3. The nymphs remain in immobile positions between the leaf sheaths and stem.

4. Ants frequently visit the mealy bug infested plants and are also found to carry the bugs to un-infested plants.

Bioecology of Termites

1. These social insects build permanent underground nests to avoid light and live in colonies.

2. They feed on roots or move above ground to cut seedlings at ground level during night.

3. As the age of the plant advances, the incidence of the termites and the proportionate damage caused by them also increases.

4. Even under conditions of water logging up to depths of 15 cm, the termites remain inside the tissues, feeding.

Chemical Control of Rice Gundhi Bug

1. Dust Malathion or Carbaryl @ 30 kg of the formulation/ha

2. Spray monocrotophos 36 WSC @ 1500 ml ha-1 or endosulfan 35 EC @ 1500 ml ha-1 or carbaryl 50 WP @1500 g ha-1 or dust malathion or carbaryl @ 30 kg of the formulation ha-1.

3. Insecticide application should be done if the population reaches ETL of 1 nymph or adult/ hill.

Nature of damage of Gundhi bug

1. The adults and nymphs suck the juice from the developing grains in the early stage of grain formation.

2. Young succulent leaves and shoots are also attacked before the grain formation stage. Infestation is characterised by the presence of some empty or ill-formed grains in the panicles.
