Kanki (Ischaemum rugosum)

 

1. Distinct transverse ridges on lower half of basal glume which are highly diagnostic for Ischaemum rugosum.

2. Other distinguishing characters: upper glume equal to or slightly longer than lower glume, spikelets less than 6 mm long.

Swanki (Echinochloa colonum)

 

1. Jungle rice, is 2 to 3 feet (60 - 90 cm) tall. Cotyledons (seed leaves) are greyish or dull green.

2. It is closely related to barnyard grass and looks similar except for the distinctive purple bands on leaves.

3. These bands may even be present on seedlings. There are no auricles or ligules in the collar region. Sharp-pointed, awnless spikelets are crowded alternately on branches.

Swank or Barnyard grass ( Echinochloa crusgalli)

1. This plant can grow to ~ 125 cm in height and has long, flat leaves which are often purplish at the base.

2. Most stems are upright, but some will spread out over the ground. Stems are flattened at the base.

3. The seed heads are having a distinctive feature, often purplish, with large millet-like seeds in crowded spikelets.
