Paddy production: Bihar panchayat breaks China’s record


A gram panchayat in Nalanda district of Bihar has surpassed the Chinese record of paddy production, the Union Agriculture Minister Mr Sharad Pawar informed Parliament today.
“As per the reports received from the state government, the yield of wet paddy has been recorded at 22.4 tonnes per hectare and that of dry paddy at 20.16 tonnes a hectare in the district of Nalanda, Bihar...,” Mr Pawar said in a written reply to Lok Sabha.

Bihar farmer beats world in paddy cultivation

It’s a green revolution of a different sort for Bihar. A farmer has set the world record in paddy cultivation over a hectare, using the indigenous system of roots intensification (SRI). The previous record was China’s.

Sumant Kumar of Darveshpura village under Katrisarai block of Nalanda district yielded 224 quintal paddy per hectare beating the world record of Yuan Longping of China with 190 quintals of paddy produce per hectare.

Kumar achieved the feat through the widely-acclaimed SRI method, which was introduced in the district in 2008.


Record paddy procurement in Haryana; Punjab buying dips

Chandigarh, Nov 29 (PTI) Haryana has recorded all-time high procurement of paddy for the central pool at 29.15 lakh tonne while lifting in agrarian state of Punjab is likely to end up at 120 lakh tonne in 2011-12 season. Before the start of procurement season, both agrarian states had targeted to procure 168 lakh tonne of paddy comprising 140 lakh tonne from Punjab and rest from Haryana. In the ongoing crop lifting, Haryana has exceeded the all time high procurement of 26.36 lakh tonne in 2009-10 for central pool by lifting 29.15 lakh tonne of crop (excluding private purchase).
